Dodgers shutout by Steven Wright, Red Sox
- Updated: August 6, 2016
The Dodgers couldn’t seem to figure out Red Sox’ knuckleballer Steven Wright on Friday night, dropping a 9-0 contest. The loss was the Dodgers’ third in their last four games.
The Red Sox took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second on a sacrifice fly by Sandy Leon, then found themselves in a 2-0 hole after a solo shot by Mookie Betts. Sandy Leon extended Boston’s lead to 4-0 in the fourth on a two-run bomb by Sandy Leon. Los Angeles had only one hit through the first seven innings, and trailed 4-0 after seven complete.
The Red Sox broke it open in the top of the eighth on a solo shot by Travis Shaw, an RBI single by Sandy Leon, a two-run error, and an RBI double by Mookie Betts. The Dodgers threatened to get on the board in the bottom of the eighth but stranded two, and it was a 9-0 Red Sox lead after eight complete.
Steven Wright was up and over 100 pitches through eight but returned for the ninth and ended up tossing his fifth complete game of the season. The game went final by a score of 9-0.
Scott Kazmir lasted five and a third innings while allowing four earned runs. Josh Fields, J.P. Howell, and Luis Avilan were all very good out of the LA bullpen, but Jesse Chavez got roughed up for the second time in as many appearances since being acquired by the Dodgers, allowing five runs (three earned) over one and a third innings.
Kazmir took the loss, his fifth of the season (9-5). His ERA is up to 4.51. The Dodgers remain two games back of the first place Giants in the NL West ahead of Saturday’s game two with Boston.
