The Dodgers’ bullpen stepped up in a big way on Saturday, tossing seven and a third innings of one-run ball in support of Brandon McCarthy who exited after one and two-thirds innings due to a hip injury. McCarthy gave up three earned before exiting the game.
Josh Fields was the first guy out of the ‘pen for Los Angeles, tossing one scoreless frame before handing things off to Julio Urias. Urias navigated out of some trouble and managed two and two-thirds scoreless innings to get things to Joe Blanton, who threw one and two-thirds scoreless frames. Pedro Baez took over in the eighth threw a scoreless inning, barely. Josh Ravin recorded two outs in the ninth before walking a couple and handing things off to Kenley Jansen in a save situation. Jansen would record his 35th save when it was all said and done.
The offense came on a run scoring GIDP by Corey Seager, an RBI double by Chase Utley, a run scoring error, an RBI single by Seager, an RBI double by Howie Kendrick, an RBI sacrifice bunt by Urias, and a solo shot by Joc Pederson. Eight runs was more than enough for the Dodgers’ ‘pen.
Julio Urias was the winning pitcher when it was all said and done (3-2) and the Dodgers kept pace with the first place Giants in the NL West, winning by a final score of 8-4.
