AL WEST
1. Seattle Mariners (90-72). A nice roster (Seth Smith was a great acquisition) is complemented by a deep minor league system. King Felix ain’t bad, either, if you’re into strikeouts and workhorse starters and wins and stuff.
2. Oakland Athletics (85-77). Starting the year without Sean Doolittle, Jarrod Parker and A.J. Griffin will hurt, especially considering catcher Derek Norris departure, but this is a fairly deep team.
3. Houston Astros (82-80). I know, right?! They’re making shrewd moves and using sabermetrics wisely, George Springer might be the next Giancarlo Stanton, and Jose Altuve is the second-best player in the American League. I don’t mean “the best player you’ve never heard of” or “the best player under 5’6” tall,” I mean he’s a stud and he should scare you.
4. Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim but maybe soon Tustin or, God forbid, possibly even Riverside (82-80). Call me Negative Nancy, but I’m pessimistic about Josh Hamilton and C.J. Wilson having bounce back years, and second base is a disaster they can’t hide from (Oh, and to close the book on Altuve, Mike Trout is the best player in the league. Duh.)
5. Texas Rangers (73-89). Serious question, and if this is the wrong time to ask, I do apologize: is Walker, Texas Ranger still syndicated on TV?
