Point Guard – Dennis Schroder
The way Chris Paul has been playing this season in the absence of Blake Griffin has been heroic. The “Point God” as we affectionately call him has been doing it all, averaging 19.3 points and 9.4 assists per game through the first half of the season to go with a solid effort on defense resulting in 2.1 steals per game. However the weight on Paul’s shoulders to carry the load without Griffin could be seen even before his primary backup Austin Rivers was ruled out for 4-6 weeks with a broken hand. Now, it might be too much for the 9-time All-Star. Pablo Prigioni is slotted in as the third point guard and his defensive effort has been tremendous, but do the Clippers need more with the absence of Rivers.
These next 4-6 weeks are crucial for the Clippers playoff seeding. A backup guard that can score efficiently much-like Rivers was doing before his injury would go a long way in helping this club. Dennis Schroder of the Atlanta Hawks fits perfectly here. Getting 10.7 points and 4.5 assists per game in just 20.7 minutes is a great statistical season for the 22 year-old in his third year of NBA play. Atlanta has even had talks about trading away starter Jeff Teague to free this kid and let him take the reigns of the perennial eastern conference playoff team. Making only $1.7 million this season also would make him a great target for the Clippers who could free that up by trading him for one of many low to mid level pieces Doc Rivers has made available.
