This trade came as an absolute shock to the majority of the fan base, especially after the Clippers star re-signed with the team this last offseason in a massive 5 year – $173 million deal. It was pitched to Griffin in the re-signing process that he would retire a Clippers player and would one day have his jersey in the rafters for the team. Clearly the team’s plans have changed as of late.
This trade included Clippers backup bigs Willie Reed and Brice Johnson as well and the Clippers received quite a haul in return. Lockdown defender Avery Bradley, Forward Tobias Harris and big man Boban Marjanovic. Along with the players Los Angeles received a first and second round pick from Detroit.
This move is a massive head scratcher for many fans as the Clippers looked like they were fighting to be in playoff position in the always challenging Western Conference. This trade moves the focus on the future and basically ends any hopes the Clippers had of making a playoff run this season.
It’s always difficult to trust a front office when a fan favorite such as Griffin is traded but I think we all hope this works out great not just for the Clippers but for Griffin as well as he gave his heart and soul to this franchise for his entire career.
Thank You Blake and best of luck in Detroit!
