Clippers Skid Continues With 122-109 Loss To Blazers

Clippers

Coming off of back to back losses the Los Angeles Clippers entered Sunday’s matchup with the Portland Trailblazers needing a win to remain in the tight Western Conference playoff race. The bad news for Los Angeles however was that Portland came into this game on an absolute tear, winning 12 straight.

With momentum clearly in the Blazers favor given recent play, the Clippers needed to jump out to a quick start to gain some energy. They weren’t able to do so and that rough start foreshadowed what was a challenging night for the team. Scoring just 18 points while shooting 33% from the field and recording 5 turnovers in the opening quarter, the Clippers managed to keep the game within arm’s length trailing by just 6. However, this was a game of false hope.

Throughout the contest Portland would go on a run and fire out to a double-digit lead, then Los Angeles would crawl back and get the game with a few possessions but never closer.

While the Clippers starters struggled to grab any sort of momentum the bench had things working. After starting the last couple of game Lou Williams was moved back to the bench to create some offense for the second unit, and it paid off. Williams was a rare bright spot, scoring a game-leading 30 points in 31 minutes off the pine.

Williams’ fellow bench star Montrezl Harrell scrapped and clawed out an impressive game in the post. Every run the Clippers would go on to trim the Blazers lead seemed to start with a Harrell highlight on one end of the floor or the other. He finished the game with an impressive 24 points and 7 rebounds against a challenging Portland frontcourt.

Even with great bench contributions the Clippers starters struggled too much to keep the team in the game. That problem was not shared by the Blazers as all 5 of their starters scored in double-figures. Led by none other than Damian Lillard with 23 points, they also got a great performance from Center Jusuf Nurkic who got a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.

Portland overpowered Los Angeles in a game that looked over as soon as it started. Closing it out with a 122-109 victory at the Staples Center.

With the playoffs looming and the Western Conference being gridlocked, three straight losses is just about the worst thing that could happen to the Clippers at this point.

The schedule won’t get any easier for the Clippers with the Timberwolves up next in Minneapolis on Tuesday.
