Clippers Comeback Falls Short In Minnesota
- Updated: February 11, 2019
On this long Grammy road trip, there’s been little that has stood in the way of the LA Clippers fighting back to earn victories. Trailing by 20 or more points has almost looked like a planned activity for the team to keep things interesting. Like when you’d play your little brother in the driveway and spot him some points to keep the game fair and exciting.
The grit the Clippers have shown to fight back has been the most impressive part of the road trip. But with this matchup against the Timberwolves being the sixth and final game of their road trip it became clear in the first half that the team needed a bit of a breather back at home. Especially since some of the team hasn’t even played or been to their new home yet since they were traded to the club in the middle of the trip.
LA trailed by as many as 23 in this game and even though they fought back to within single-digits, that comeback magic finally ran out.
The Clippers starting unit struggled all around with the leading scorer for the unit being Danilo Gallinari with just 12 points. With Shai Gilgeous-Alexander being the only other player that scored in double-digits with 10.
It was up to the deep LA bench to get some momentum going in the team’s favor and they didn’t disappoint. Lou Williams led all scorers with a fiery 45 points and made history as the first player ever to score 40+ points off the bench 4 times in their career. Williams led the late charge for LA but he had some help. Montrezl Harrell and Jamychal Green chipped in on the glass with 12 and 7 rebounds respectively but it was the complete game from Harrell that caught the eye as he also finished with 18 points and 6 assists.
Despite that great bench play, the struggles from the starting unit mixed with the team’s many turnovers allowed the Timberwolves to hold on and get a 130-120 victory.
Even with the loss it’s difficult to complain about the Clippers going 3-3 on this lengthy road trip, especially with all the turnover the team had at the trade deadline. The Clippers return to Los Angeles Wednesday to take on the Phoenix Suns for their first home game since January 31st.
