Chargers Season Wrap-Up

The Los Angeles Chargers took something good into the offseason with their 38-21 win over the Chiefs in Kansas City. But it wasn’t enough to save Head Coach Anthony Lynn his job.

Anthony Lynn was fired early Monday morning after four seasons, and a very disappointing 7-9 record season. The Chargers were the only team in the NFL that lost games when holding a 16-point lead at any point in their games.

There were many positive achievements for this team that will be the focus of their progression moving forward. Justin Herbert proved to be the successor to Philip Rivers at quarterback. Herbert set the rookie mark for touchdown passes (31), breaking the previous mark set by Cleveland’s Baker Mayfield.

The Chargers will have several things to think over in the offseason like on defensive and how to improve. The offensive side of the ball isn’t that bad. We found a solid player in Kalen Ballage who stepped his game up when Austin Ekeler went down for several weeks during the season. Ballage will be a great asset if he stays with the team.
Joshua Kelley and Justin Jackson will be competing for the third spot on the roster. An aging Keenan Allen will be the question as to the team’s number one receiver. Mike Williams, Jalen Guyton, KJ Hill, and Tyron Johnson are emerging as a solid number three, but the team will have to look to free agency for a good number two receiver. Hunter Henry played well at tight end this year, but another solid tight end is definitely needed for this team.

Who will be the team’s next head coach? 10 solid candidates could change the direction of the team. The biggest name is Chiefs Offensive Coordinator Eric Bieniemy, a former running back with the San Diego Chargers from 1991 to 1994. Bieniiemy is the best choice for this team, hands down. With a good knowledge of the division and an inside on how to beat the Kansas City Chiefs, why not go with a head coach that knows how to win. His resume is the best of all the candidates that are out on the market. Raheem Morris is another good choice for the Chargers, he was instrumental in the turn around of the Atlanta Falcons after they fired their coach mid-season. A great defensive mind, the Falcons played excellent on the defensive side of the ball when he took over as the team’s head coach.

Finally, this team will improve, they will look prepared to compete from day one with the right leader at the helm. With Herbert at quarterback, this team’s future looks really bright.
