SAN DIEGO, Ca- Philip Rivers got a nice 4-year 84 million dollar extension during training camp and rewarded the Chargers with a 33-28 come from behind victory over the Detroit Lions on Week 1 of the 2015 NFL season.
The Chargers were down as much as 21-3 in yesterday’s game but that did not phase Rivers and the Chargers as they clawed their way back to victory.
It was the Lions who jumped out to an early lead. Ameer Abdullah took a carry up the middle for a 24 yard touchdown to put the Lions up 7-0 early. The Chargers answered back with a Josh Lambo 32 yard field goal and after the 1st quarter the Charger trailed 7-3.
Rivers threw his first interception of the year in the beginning of the 2nd quarter. It was a pass intended for Keenan Allen that was picked off by Glover Quin and returned for a touchdown that gave the Lions a 14-3 lead.
After a short drive by the Chargers the Lions got the ball back and Matthew Stafford threw his 1st TD of the year. He connected with Eric Ebron for a 18 yard TD and the Lions lead 21-3.
Already down 21-3 in the middle of the 2nd quarter Charger fans became anxious. Danny Woodhead took a carry up the middle for a 9 yard TD and the Chargers cut the deficit to 21-10 heading into halftime.
Coming out of half the Chargers had some fire under the belt. Lambo connected on a 25 yard field goal to cut the lead to 21-13. Rivers connected with Steve Johnson on a pass for a 12 yard TD that put the Chargers within 1 heading into the 4th quarter.
Rivers linked up with the Ladarius Green in the 4th quarter for a 13 yard touchdown. It was uncertain whether Green was going to play or not this game and fans were more than happy he was out there when he caught the go ahead TD pass. Lambo missed the extra point so the Charger lead was just 26-21.
With just over 2:30 left in the game Woodhead ran up the middle for his second TD of the game that gave the Chargers a 33-21 lead.
The Lions answered back with 1:04 left on the clock when Stafford linked up with Theo Riddick for a 21 yard touchdown. It was too little too late for the Lions as the Chargers held on to win in Week 1 33-28.
