Chargers GM Isn’t Worried About Age
- Updated: January 8, 2015
San Diego Chargers fans understand that the team is in no way shape or form the spring chicken in the NFL. In fact the Chargers ended the 2014 season with the second-oldest team in the NFL.
With the average age of 27.3 years old one could say that the Chargers need to get younger. They had 14 players over the age of 30, but some midseason additions did inflate that number quite a bit. However, some of the best players on the Chargers roster is over the age of 30.
Franchise quarterback Philip Rivers, Hall of Famer Antonio Gates, Pro Bowler Eric Weddle, and receiver Malcom Floyd are just a few names over 30 on the Chargers squad.
Tom Telesco spoke about the age issue during his season ending news conference in which ESPN.com writer Eric Williams was in attedence.
“I don’t get worried about the average age of your roster,” Telesco said. “I don’t think that works. We probably had seven or eight prominent players on our roster that are over 30. But for me, No. 1, those are the guys that have really built this foundation for us. And we couldn’t have done it without those guys. So that’s key.”
That quote demonstrates that the average age of the roster isn’t a concern for the Chargers. They are more focused on bringing in talent in an effort to win a SuperBowl for San Diego.
