Carl Crawford Designed for Assignment, Austin Barnes Called Up
- Updated: June 5, 2016
This morning the front office of the Los Angeles Dodgers showed some huge cojones by designating outfielder (really left-fielder, you don’t want him at CF or RF at all) Carl Crawford for assignment (DFA) and in the process called up Austin Barnes who can catch, play 2B, and some outfield and is pretty good with the bat as well.
If you don’t understand a DFA here is how it is explained:
When a player is Designated for Assignment (DFA’d), he is removed from his team’s 40-man roster but is still considered on the team until resolution of the status.
Within 10 days, the team must:
- Return him to the 40-man roster
- Trade him
- Release him (once he has cleared waivers)
- Place the player on waivers (first 7 days only) for the purpose of outrighting him to a minor league team.
- Outright the player to the minors
A player may only be outrighted without his consent 1 time in his career but he still must clear waivers.
Players on waivers may be claimed by other organizations.
This was a move long in the making and this is the right move at the right time, Carl Crawford was not only underperforming with the bat, he was poor in the field and was not bringing a positive contribution to the team.
Now, while I’m happy that we’re getting rid of his unproductivity I am sad that a good guy like Crawford is no longer on the team but if he’s outrightly released by the team maybe he can get picked up, happy trailers to you Carl Crawford.
Now here are some tweets by some smart people I follow.
There's about $35 million left on Carl Crawford's contract (thru 2017) and it's likely #Dodgers will have to pay it all.

Carl Crawford was never fully appreciated when he was playing well (2013-14, esp. playoffs) but it was definitely time to cut ties.

Looking back on the big BOS/LA deal, still seems win-win. LA got AG, some useful time from JB/NP/CC, gave up 0 talent. Sox cleared ton of $.
