Can the San Diego Chargers win the AFC West title?

Chargers

Last season didn’t exactly go to plan for the San Diego Chargers as they slipped to a 4-12 record and fourth place in the AFC West. In fact, Mike McCoy’s men went 0-6 in fixtures against their divisional rivals and that was a key reason for their failures in 2015.

But now, they are back and ready to compete for a place in the playoffs. We take a look at their chances ahead of what could be an intriguing campaign for Chargers fans…

On the whole, San Diego drafted pretty well this year and fans will be breathing a heavy sigh of relief after first-round pick Joey Bosa finally signed with the team at the end of August. Chargers supporters will be expecting big things from Bosa this season and he could blossom into the leader of San Diego’s defensive front.

The Chargers will fancy their chances against the pass in 2016 – especially after their sterling effort last season. San Diego had the 14th best pass defense but added pressure upfront will help to keep opposing quarterbacks on the back foot this time around.

McCoy is under serious pressure but San Diego have potential this year; and he knows it. At the time of writing, the Chargers are 7/1 to win the AFC West but stranger things have happened. Denver, Kansas City and Oakland are all capable franchises but one or two injuries will change the entire complexion of the division.

In the build-up to San Diego’s next contest, punters can check out this week’s betting odds only at Betway.com and many will fancy the Chargers to rack up a crucial victory in their bid to reach the playoffs. The Broncos could struggle after losing key components on defense, the Chiefs lack game-changers at wide receiver and the Raiders are the Raiders…

Quarterback Philip Rivers will benefit directly from Keenan Allen’s return and San Diego will believe that they now boast one of the most exciting pass offenses in the National Football League. With veteran tight-end Antonio Gates, Allen and running back Danny Woodhead catching out of the backfield, the Chargers will be mixing up the playbook in 2016.

On paper, San Diego have plenty of potential this year and their playoff aspirations will come down to their divisional fixtures. If they can compete with Denver, Kansas City and Oakland, the Chargers could make the playoffs and from there, anything is possible. The AFC West crown may be out of reach but a wildcard slot is certainly plausible…
