Bullpen spoils Stripling’s Debut Dodgers Lose To Giants
- Updated: April 9, 2016
One minute the Dodgers were marveling at their fifth starter’s work and then it turned into a nightmare in San Francisco.
After Ross Stripling was taken out with a no-hitter intact through 7 1/3 innings, the bullpen imploded for the second consecutive night in a row as the Dodgers fell 3-2 in 10 innings.
Stripling was trying to become the first pitcher to throw a no-hitter in a major league debut since Bumpus Jones of the Cincinnati Reds threw one against the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1892. Stripling who was two years removed from Tommy John surgery made 100 pitches and then was taken out by manager Dave Roberts. Roberts said after the game it was his plan to monitor Stripling’s pitch count.
As soon as Stripling was taken out, the Giants keyed in on Andrew Hatcher who struggled in the first part of last season. The early season struggles haunted the Dodgers again as Giants catcher Trevor took a fastball from Hatcher into dead-center field to tie the game in the eighth.
Moments later, the Dodgers meltdown went from bad to ugly. On a 1-0 count Hatcher vocalized his frustration toward home plate umpire Jeff Kellogg. Roberts quickly ran onto the field to separate his pitcher from Kellogg and moments later the rookie manager was ejected from the game.
In the 10th inning Brandon Crawford delivered the final blow off Joe Blanton for the walk-off home run. The Giants have won seven of its last 10 games at home against the Dodgers.
Clayton Kershaw will be on the mound today against Madison Bumgarner. Kershaw has a 4-6 record when pitching against Bumgarner.
