Geren is a former first round pick of the San Diego Padres back in the 1979 MLB Draft. He spent five years in the majors, four seasons with the New York Yankees and one with the Padres.
He then began his coaching career with the Boston Red Sox to manage in the minor league system. He then went on to become a bench coach for the Oakland Athletics.
Geren worked his way up and became the manager of Athletics in 2007. He was the manager for four seasons before being let go in 2011.
He then joined the Mets in 2012 and has been their bench coach since then.
Jared Diamond of the The Wall Street Journal reported some information on Geren.
Bob Geren is a data-first coach and was a great contrast to Terry Collins in the dugout. This brings him near his family in So. California.
