Blazers Guards Outduel Clippers In 116-105 Win

Coming off of a monster win against the Timberwolves the Los Angeles Clippers traveled to Portland Thursday night to take on the Trailblazers.

Known for their volume shooting guards, the Blazers were sure to give the Clippers a test and challenge them they did. Damian Lillard was guarded by rookie Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to start the game and he picked on the rookie a bit early. Lillard was able to finish the night with a game high 25 points but he did so on 25 shots. CJ McCollum turned in a more well rounded performance for Portland closing the night out with 23 points, along with 7 rebounds.

Gilgeous-Alexander might’ve looked like a rookie defensively early on but once he got into a groove the 20 year-old was drawing ooh’s and ah’s from the Moda Center crowd. Gilgeous-Alexander has been using his size so far in his career to get to the basket, but in this one he showed he can also knock down those long-range jumpers. While going 2-2 from beyond the arc and flashing the distance, the rookie also found time to do what he does best.

Shai showed off a bit putting in 19 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists and a block. Typically a performance like that from a young guy like Gilgeous-Alexander would put the team over the top but less than stellar performances from the vets that usually lead the team left his performance as an outlier.

Tobias Harris had a solid night, notching a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds. Meanwhile Danilo Gallinari was able to finish up with 20 points and 5 rebounds. While those performances aren’t lackluster, they weren’t quite enough in this one to deal with the scoring punch the Blazers brought. It also didn’t help matters that Portland was able to snatch up 14 offensive rebounds and took advantage of some early Clippers foul trouble by knocking home 26 of 28 free throws on the night.

In the end, the road matchup was just be too much for the Clippers to overcome and the Trailblazers came out on top 116-105.

The Clippers (6-5) will head back home to Staples Center to take on Giannis Antetokounmpo (8-2) and the Bucks Saturday.
