Goaltending

No surprises here.  Our starting goaltender is going to the guy that got us all the glory, the 2012 Conn Smythe Trophy winner and the leader in career wins for the organization, Jonathan Quick. A combination of Dominik Hasek (by making the impossible saves possible in a gravity defying, logic bending and head scratching manner), Grant Fuhr (by sometimes letting some bad goals in but being mentally tough enough to not let them bother him by coming back strong and making timely saves in key situations that allow his team to hold on and come back) and a sprinkle of Mike Richter (who was a clutch playoff performer and Quick’s idol growing up), Quick is the goaltender that the King’s management and fan base have always wanted and finally got (and don’t forget it).

The back-up goalie will be the one and only Rogie Vachon.  The first real superstar to play as one and be a member of the Los Angeles Kings, Vachon won 3 Stanley Cups with the Montreal Canadiens as well as a Vezina Trophy (with Lorne “Gump” Worsley) as the Goalie of the year in 1968.  After a tough first couple of seasons as a newborn expanding franchise, Vachon became a fan favorite by being the first goaltender for the Kings to actually steal games by holding down the fort with skill and heart.

The third string goaltender will be the head band wearing cool cat Kelly Hrudey. Looking like a Hollywood goaltender, if there ever was one, and though not as technically sound or creative as Jonathan Quick or Rogie Vachon, Hrudey played his heart and butt off during the “Gretzky” era and helped the team reach the 1993 Stanley Cup Final.

Let’s add Daryl Sutter as the team head coach and Dean Lombardi as the GM (even though I did all the work) and voila, we have our “best of all-time” All-Star Los Angeles King’s team!

Robitaille – Gretzky – Sandstrom
Simmer – Dionne – Taylor
Brown – Kopitar – Carter
Palffy – Allison – Deadmarsh
Williams, Nicholls,

Scuderi – Doughty
Mitchell – Blake
Greene – Murphy
Martinez, Duchesne,

Quick – Vachon – Hrudey.

Now with Sutter as the head coach, he’s not going to say which line is the top line, or which players are his best and would probably also throw all the lines into a his own blender to come up with other line combination ideas but the possibilities with this team are endless.  Maybe we’ll have a dream super power Gretzky, Dionne and Kopitar team up with Doughty and Blake on a power play or have an all European line of Palffy, Kopitar and Sandstrom, who knows but you got to admit it’s fun to think and dream about?

Do you like or dislike, agree or disagree with my selections? Do you have any other ideas, players or line ups in mind then please feel free to let us know about them in the comments section below.  I had a lot of fun with creating this team and you should too and I’d love to see what all of you come up with!  Have fun, be creative and do your best, you know, be everything that we won’t see in this weekend’s All-Star game! (get it, ’cause its boring?)  Until then, I will see you all on Wednesday for the start of the second half of the season!  Bring on the Hawks and Go Kings Go!

Stay with us at Calisportsnews.com as we will keep you up-to-date on all things Los Angeles Kings and the rest of the LA sports teams! All Cali, All the time!
