Angels Win 7-1 vs A’s as Tim Lincecum Debuts

In starting pitcher Tim Lincecum’s debut as an Angel, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim routed the Oakland A’s 7-1 in the second game of a three game series at the Oakland Coliseum.

Wearing the No. 55 jersey, Lincecum returned to the Bay Area and threw 98 pitches through six innings, striking out two batters and allowing only one run and two walks.

Oakland scored the opening run of the game in the bottom of the third inning, but Lincecum escaped allowing more runs after loading the bases. The Angels trailed 1-0 going into the fourth inning, and in need of some runs to help Lincecum in the other half of the inning.

Mike Trout opened the top of the fourth inning with a solo homerun to left-center field to tie the game. Not long after, Johnny Giavotella launched a shot over the left field wall to give the Angels a 2-1 lead.

Lincecum threw a 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the fourth to preserve the Angels one-run lead. The A’s were conservative on the mound as the home team consistently made pitching changes to keep the Angels’ star hitters from taking over the game.

The Angels were unable to get Yunel Escobar home after the third baseman got to second with an early double. Lincecum did not allow a run in the bottom of the inning again.

In the top of the sixth, the Angels added to their lead after RBIs from Andrelton Simmons on a sacrifice fly followed by Escobar, who batted home two runs with loaded bases to increase the lead to 5-1.

The A’s loaded the bases again with Trout coming to the plate, forcing a visit to the mound. The MVP doubled and brought two runs home to add to the Angels lead at 7-1. Lincecum was relieved and received a standing ovation from the crowd.

The Angels held on and the game finished 7-1. The rubber match is tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. PT in Oakland as Jered Weaver takes on Eric Surkamp.
