In the rubber match of the three-game series between the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim and the Pittsburgh Pirates, the Angels beat the Pirates 5-4 in Pittsburgh.
With Gerrit Cole on the mound for the Pirates facing off against Hector Santiago, the Halos faced a tough test against the 30-25 Pirates. The Angels scored in the first after Albert Pujols hit a sacrifice fly to right field to send Yunel Escobar home to give the Angels an early lead, but the lead vanished in the bottom of the inning as the home team scored a run.
The Pirates increased took the lead at 3-1 in the second inning and forced the Angels to make a pitching change in the 5th inning as Santiago was relieved by Javy Guerra, who was then relieved by Jose Alvarez in the sixth. Alvarez surrendered a run in the sixth as the Pirates added to their lead to make the game 4-1.
In the top of the seventh, the Halos scored two runs through C.J. Cron and Gregorio Petit for the Angels to cut back on the Pirates lead and make the game 4-3. The final out of the first half of the inning produced a highlight worthy catch by Pirates center fielder Starling Marte, who extended himself in a diving catch to rob Escobar and the Angels of tying the game.
Deolis Guerra stepped onto the mound in the bottom of the seventh in relief of Alvarez, and the right-handed pitcher threw a 1-2-3 inning to send the game to the eight with a score of 4-3 in favor of the Pirates. In the bottom of the inning Albert Pujols put the Angels back in front after launching a 2-run home run over the left field wall off of Tony Watson. The homer was Pujols’ 12th of the season as the Halos retook the lead 5-4.
In the bottom of the ninth, Houston Street allowed runners to reach second and third, then the closer intentionally walked Marte to load the bases with one out. Street and the Angels escaped after a 6-4-3 double play to end the game. Anaheim won the series with the 5-4 win in Pittsburgh.
