Angels Use Power To Beat Mariners, Move Closer To AL Wild Card

ANAHEIM, Ca-  The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim powered past the Seattle Mariners on Friday night to move within a 1/2 game of the AL wild card spot.

For the Halos Garrett Richards got the start. He pitched 7 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs. He struck out 8 and walked 4 and did allow a home run. 68 of his 109 pitches were strikes, and he picked up his 15th win of the year.

On the other side Vidal Nuno got the start. He lasted only 4.1 innings allowing 9 hits and 5 runs. He struck out 4 and allowed a home run. 50 of his 67 pitches were strikes and he picked up his 4th loss of the season.

Nelson Cruz got Seattle on the board in the first inning. His solo home run to left center was his 43rd of the year and gave Seattle a 1-0 lead.

The Angels answered back with 4 runs in the bottom half of the inning. Mike Trout hit a RBI double that brought in Erick Aybar. Albert Pujols followed with a 2-run home run that was his 37th of the year. David Freese got in on the action with a RBI single that brought in C.J. Cron and pushed the Angels lead to 4-1.

In the 2nd inning Seattle pushed 2 runs across. Logan Morrison hit a RBI single that brought in Seth Smith. Brad Miller followed with a bunt RBI single single that brought in Mark Trumbo and the Mariners cut the lead to 4-3.

Johnny Giavotella hit a RBI single in the 4th inning that brought in Shane Victorino. This pushed the lead to 5-3. Giavotella was at it again in the 6th inning this time with a RBI triple that pushed the lead to 6-3.

Cron hit a 2-run home run in the 7th inning. It was his  15th of the year and pushed the lead to 8-3.

The Mariners attempted to make a comeback in the 8th inning. Morrison hit a RBI single that brought in Robinson Cano but was the last of their comeback efforts.

The Angels won 8-4 and moved closer to the AL Wild card spot. Last night’s win made it 3 in a row for the Halos.

The Angels and Mariners will continue their series tonight at 6:05 p.m. PST. Felix Hernandez and Andrew Heaney are their projected starters.
