Angels Remain Unbeaten After the All-Star Break, With A 7-4 Win Over Texas
- Updated: July 21, 2016
The hottest team in baseball is now your Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim! Winners of their sixth-straight game as they beat the Texas Rangers again, 7-4.
Break out the brooms for the second straight series, and for the first time since 2014 the team has won a homestand sweep. Simply impressive on the way the team has performed and to gaining ground in the standings.
The Angels came out swinging early, scoring four runs in the bottom of the first inning, capped off by a Jefry Marte three-run homer. The team added another run in the second, on a single to right off the bat of Yunel Escobar that scored Johnny Giavotella to push the lead to 5-0. Texas cut the lead to three in the top of the third inning to 5-2, but the Angels added another run, on a single by Albert Pujols, his 72nd of the season. The team closed the scoring in the fourth inning on an Escobar sac-fly to right, that scored Todd Cunningham.
Hector Santiago (W,8-4), pitched five strong innings to pick up the win on an even one hundred pitches thrown. Huston Street pitched the ninth inning in a non-save situation and gave up a homer to Ian Desmond and a double to Adrian Beltre that landed in the right field stands, just out of the reach of a diving Kole Calhoun.
HALO’S DUGOUT:
The win is the longest of the season and the team looks like they can make a true turnaround from a very sub-par first half of the season. The starting pitching and the bullpen have made a difference in the six-game winning streak.
ANGELS ON DECK:
The Angels (43-52), are heading to the Lone Star state for a three-game showdown with the Houston Astros. Los Angeles had battled the Astros with little success this season, but with the team has been playing this should be a very good series. Matt Shoemaker (5-9, 4.08 ERA), will make his second start after the break. Shoemaker is coming off an excellent last start when he completed a six-hit complete game shutout of the Chicago White Sox.
The Astros will send Lance McCullers (4-4, 3.61 ERA), to the mound. The Angels has officially moved out of the basement of the American League West, they are now 11.5 games back of the Texas Rangers.
