Angels Lose A Heartbreaker To Baltimore, 3-1
- Updated: May 22, 2016
The Angels were one out away from the victory, but a two out three-run homer by Matt Wieters gave the Baltimore Orioles the victory, 3-1.
Joe Smith (L,1-3), threw a 1-0 sinker that Wieters caught and sent the ball sailing over the left-center field wall, which put the Orioles ahead and was the game winner. Angels starter Matt Shoemaker, was brilliant on the mound, only to see his great game washed away by one pitch. Shoemaker went 7-1/3 innings, only allowing the Orioles three hits while striking out twelve on ninety-five pitches.
The team scored their only run in the bottom of the seventh inning, on a Yunel Escobar single to right-center which scores Gregorio Petit, who had doubled earlier in the inning. This was a game to remember for Petit, who collected his second career three-hit game. This was his first since 2009 when he was a member of the Oakland A’s.
HALOS DUGOUT:
The Angels final at-bat was barred in some controversy. Home plate Umpire Dale Scott really needs to see the eye doctor on his next off day. Yunel Escobar was ejected in the ninth inning of this game for arguing a call of a strike that was very low in the strike zone. watching this game on the replay, the pitch was clearly not in the vicinity of the strike zone. The same with a pitch that was called on the final batter of the game, Mike Trout on a pitch that was clearly in the dirt. On the replay, Orioles Catcher Matt Wieters glove was on the ground when the call of a strike was made. Angels Manager Mike Scioscia was very disgusted and after the final out was made, he just simply stood at the top of the dugout and stared down Scott.
ANGELS ON DECK:
The two teams will conclude their series today in Anaheim. The Angels (19-24), will try to end the two-game skid. The Angels will send Jared Weaver (3-3, 5.76 ERA) to the mound. His counterpart will be Ubaldo Jimenez (2-4,5.60 ERA), who simply looked really bad in his last outing, when the Orioles got shut-out by the Seattle Mariners, 10-0. With the loss, the Angels are now five games below .500 and are in third place in the American League West, 6.5 games behind the Seattle Mariners.
