Angels Get Past Tigers, 11-9
- Updated: June 1, 2016
In one of the wildest games so far this season, the Angels come out on the winning end, 11-9 over the Detroit Tigers. The Angels are now in good shape after their second straight win over the Tigers. The Memorial Day win 5-1 was a great way to improve on the current homestand, bring the record to (3-2).
This game had a little of everything, including an early lead, three key injuries, ninth inning heroics, and a great two-home run performance by C.J. Cron. Cron started the scoring for the Angels in the bottom of the first when he hit 400 ft. over the left-center wall to tie the game at one run apiece. The big blow was the game-winner, his two-run shot in the bottom of the ninth for the victory. In one of the best games of his career, Cron ended the game going 2 for 4 and he drove in five of the team’s nine runs.
The Angels took the lead in the second inning, on a Mike Trout three-run blast into left-center, that scored Cliff Pennington and Kole Calhoun. The bottom of the third was capped by another homer by Jefry Marte, giving the Angels a 6-2 advantage. The Angels added three more runs in the fourth, to push the lead to 9-2. The Tigers managed to erase a seven-run deficit on homers by J.D. Martinez, Ian Kinsler, and Victor Martinez, to take this game into the ninth inning tied at nine.
Angels Starter Hector Santiago pitched six and a third innings, giving up six earned runs, three homers, two walks striking out nine on one hundred and seven pitches. Huston Street (W,2-0), picked up the win in relief, in his return after a long stint on the disabled list.
HALOS DUGOUT:
As mentioned earlier, both teams had some critical injuries that will be looked at further. In the bottom of the sixth inning, Tigers Reliever Warwick Saupold injured his right groin on a play when he was attempting to cover first base. Tigers will keep a close eye on Outfielder Cameron Maybin, who may have re-injury to his left wrist. Cliff Pennington strained his left hamstring on a line drive to end the seventh inning.
ANGELS ON DECK:
The two teams will conclude their series today in Anaheim. Both teams will be in searching for their twenty-fifth win of the season. The Halos are (24-28), and they will send Matt Shoemaker (3-5, 5.96 ERA) to the hill, in an attempt for the three-game sweep of the Tigers. Detroit will send Michael Fulmer (4-1, 3.97 ERA) to the mound. The two-game winning streak helped the Angels as they are still in third place in the American League West, seven full games behind the Texas Rangers.
