Angels Drop Opener At Yankees 5-2
- Updated: June 6, 2016
Following a series win in Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim travelled to Yankee Stadium to take on the New York Yankees, who scored five unanswered runs to take the first game of the four-game series.
The Angels faced another tough test at the mound as Masahiro Tanaka started for the Yankees. Once again, the Angels got off to an early 1-0 lead as Yunel Escobar led off with a single, and last night’s hero, Albert Pujols, batted him home with a blooper to center field.
In the top of the third, Gregorio Petit lobbed a ground rule double over the left field off to lead off the inning for the Halos. Escobar then knocked a bunt down the third base line to advance Petit to third and give the Angels a chance to score with one out. Kole Calhoun stepped up and hit a sacrifice fly deep into center field as Petit tagged up and scored the Angels second run.
The Halos seemed impenetrable on the defensive end. In the first six innings, starting pitcher Matt Shoemaker threw 59 pitches in 6 scoreless innings, faced 20 batters, and only surrendered 4 hits.
Offensively, the Angels were struggling and on two occasions the Halos left two runners stranded. This came back to haunt the Angels.
With two outs in the bottom of the seventh Brian McCann and Starlin Castro nailed back-to-back solo home runs off of Shoemaker to tie the game. Shoemaker was able to close out the inning, but the damage was done as the ballgame was all square at 2-2.
Things went from bad to worse for the Angels in the bottom of the eighth. Shoemaker was relieved by Jose Alvarez, who let up a 3-run home run to Carlos Beltran to take the lead for the Yankees.
The Halos were unable to make a comeback in the top of the ninth, losing the game 5-2. The Halos take on the Yankees in the second game of the four-game series tomorrow at 4:05 p.m. PT.
