Angels Beat A’s With One Swing, 8-6

@si_mlb

In one of the most dramatic games of the season, one swing of the bat gave the Angels the 8-6 win over the Oakland Athletics.

Albert Pujols game-winning homer in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the team the victory, with a mob of joyous teammates that greeted him at home plate. Pujols said after the game, “In a situation like that, you try to do a good job to get on base.” The homer was the 21st for Pujols and the 581st of his career.

The homer by Pujols was the last of three hit by the Angels last night. Jefry Marte hit his eighth of the season, in the bottom of the fourth and Cliff Pennington hit his second of the season, both off of A’s starter Kendall Graveman.

Jared Weaver started this game and went six full innings but wasn’t able to pick up his ninth win of the season. Mike Morin (W,2-1) picked up the win in relief after Cam Bedrosian allowed the A’s to tie this game in the top of the ninth.

HALO’s DUGOUT:

The home run by Pujols leaves him two homers behind Mark McGwire for tenth on the all-time homer list. Pujols has a real chance to move into ninth place by the end of the season. With six more homers, he will surpass Frank Robinson‘s 586.

ANGELS ON DECK:

The team will go for the sweep in this three-game series. Ricky Nolasco (4-8, 5.13 ERA), will make his debut for the Angels. Jesse Hahn (2-4, 5.53 ERA) will take the mound for Oakland. Anaheim will continue to move up in the standings with another win. The now have a two game lead on the Athletics in the American League West, as the team avoids staying out of the basement of the division.
