Andy Dalton Lifts Bengals Over Chargers 24-19

CINCINNATI, Oh- Andy Dalton threw for 3 touchdowns as the Cincinnati Bengals beat the San Diego Chargers 24-19.

The Chargers looked to improve their record to 2-0 but were unable to comeback like they did last week. Philip Rivers came into the game with a streak of 20 consecutive completions  just four off of Donovan McNabb‘s record of 24. He completed his first two passes which is Chargers franchise record.

The Bengals got on the board in the 1st quarter when Dalton connected with A.J. Green for a 16 yard touchdown. Mike Nugent kicked the extra point to give the Bengals a 7-0 lead.

The Chargers were able to respond with a Josh Lambo 40 yard field goal. This cut the lead to 7-3 after the first quarter.

In the second quarter Lambo hit field goal this time from 32 yards out and the Chargers cut the lead to 7-6. Dalton threw his second touchdown pass of the day, this time to Marvin Jones. It was a 45 yard bomb that pushed the Bengals lead to 14-6 at halftime.

The Chargers came out of halftime on mission. Rivers connected with Stevie Johnson for a 10 yard touchdown pass that cut the lead to 14-13.

Cincinnati responded with a Nugent 21 yard field goal at the end of the 3rd quarter and the Bengals lead 17-13 heading into the 4th.

With 8:49 left in the 4th quarter Dalton linked up with Tyler Eifert for a 9 yard touchdown. This gave the Bengals a 24-13 advantage.

Rivers tried to deliver some Charger magic in the 4th quarter. He connected with Malcom Floyd for a 40 yard touchdown pass. The Bolts then attempted to go for the 2-point conversion and failed and eventually fell 24-19.

Rivers connected on 21/27 attempts for 241 yards and 2 touchdown to go along with 1 interception. Melvin Gordon was able to have a strong game running the ball as he ran for 88 yards on 16 carries.

Danny Woodhead led the way with 6 catches for 68 yards, and Ladarius Green chipped in with 5 catches for 47 yards.

Dalton connected on 16/26 attempts for the Bengals. He threw for 214 yards and 2 touchdowns. Giovani Bernard had a strong game on the ground rushing for 123 yards on 20 attempts.

On the defensive end Eric Weddle and Manti Te’o led the way with 10 tackles each. Adam Jones and Dre Kirkpatrick recorded 9 and 7 tackles respectively. Carlos Dunlap record 1.5 sacks and Wallace Gilberry and Geno Atkins also record 1 each as well.

The Chargers will travel to Minnesota to take on the Vikings next Sunday at 11 a.m. PST
