Alex Wood’s One-Hit Gem Blanks Rockies

The Los Angeles Dodgers defeated the Colorado Rockies on Wednesday night, 2-0. Alex Wood pitched a one-hit gem in eight innings to win the series.

Alex Wood was handed the baseball on Wednesday night’s rubber match against the Rockies. After giving up six earned runs in 1.2 innings in his last start, the young lefty bounced back in a tremendous way, pitching a one-hitter in eight innings and striking out five batters on only 78 pitches. Wood retired the last 19 batters he faced en route to his 11th win on the season.

AJ Ellis drew first blood in the 2nd inning, blasting a 3-2 pitch to left field for his 6th home run of the year. In the 6th inning, Corey Seager added to the Dodgers’ lead with a RBI single to right field. The young and promising shortstop, who batted cleanup on Wednesday night, has reached base in all of his 12 starts for the Dodgers.

Despite Wood’s low pitch count, Kenley Jansen went on the shut the door on the Rockies to win the series, earning his 32nd save on the season.

The Dodgers have won the last seven series against the Colorado Rockies and will look to continue their streak when they visit Coors Field on September 25.

The Dodgers (84-61) maintain a half-game lead over the New York Mets (83-63), their possible NLDS opponents, for home-field advantage. Their magic number is down to 10 after Wednesday night’s action.

The Dodgers’ postseason prowess will be tested as they host the NL Wild Card-leading Pittsburgh Pirates in a three-game series starting on Friday night, 7:10PM PST, with Zack Greinke (17-3, 1.61 ERA) on the hill against Jeff Locke (8-10, 4:43 ERA).
