For this edition, let’s dive into the news surrounding the Los Angeles Kings.
Yahoo Sports is reporting that the Los Angeles Kings are looking to sign James McBain to help the depleted blueline:
“During their 5-1 win over the Vancouver Canucks on Saturday, the Los Angeles Kings were limited to only five defensemen for the game. A salary cap squeeze, compounded by Slava Voynov’s suspension, caused the team to be $160 (!) short of being able to make a call-up.
Along with Voynov’s paid absence from the lineup, Robyn Regehr is dealing with a lower-body injury, opening the door for general manager Dean Lombardi to sign Jamie McBain, who had been on a PTO with the Kings’ AHL affiliate in Manchester.
According to Lisa Dillman of the LA Times, McBain won’t be officially signed until Tuesday when the Kings have some extra cap space open up to allow the defenseman’s $550,000 contract on their books.
It’s been a busy few weeks for McBain, who went to training camp on a PTO with the Arizona Coyotes. When he was cut, he went back home to Minnesota to skate at his father’s rink and stay in shape, while waitnig for a phone call. Manchester called, and now 10 days later he’s an emergency fill-in as the Kings wait to see how long Regehr might be out, as well as whether Voynov will face domestic violence charges.”

The Los Angeles Times explains how the LA Kings are being kept in limbo by NHL salary cap rules.
“When the Kings wanted to call up a defenseman from the minor leagues Saturday to replace the injured Robyn Regehr they consulted their calculators before they checked flight schedules.
Because they’re near the salary cap limit and are carrying Slava Voynov’s $4.1-million salary while he’s suspended with pay by the NHL and under investigation on suspicion of domestic violence, they didn’t have enough cap space to summon a defenseman earning even the league-minimum of $550,000. The gap was $160.
“I had more money in my pocket. I was willing to contribute the difference,” said Jeff Solomon, the Kings’ senior vice president of hockey operations and legal affairs. “But I didn’t think that was going to work.”
Because the cap changes daily, the Kings will have enough space Tuesday to sign defenseman Jamie McBain to a league-minimum contract. But they’re still in a bind, unable to get salary-cap relief while they’re paying Voynov.”
