Recap: Rockies 2 Padres 1

Tyson Ross was on the mound looking to secure the series win for the Padres over the Rockies. Colorado sent out Jordan Lyles for the start.

With some of the regulars like Justin Upton, Derek Norris and Will Middlebrooks sitting; reserves like Will Venable, Wil Nieves and Cory Spangenberg would see playing time in the final game of the series.

The Rockies got on the board in the first after a Daniel Descalso bases loaded walk that forced a run home. Ross battled control issues in the first few innings, that has been a theme for him so far this season.

In the Top of the 4th, Yonder Alonso would continue his hot start to the season, lacing a single to left field driving in Matt Kemp from 2nd base.

Ross left a fastball over the middle of the plate that Corey Dickerson blasted to right-center field to lead off the 5th inning. The home run was Dickerson’s 3rd in the last two games and 5th of the season. Tyson Ross’s final line would be 5.0 innings, 2 earned runs, 4 walks and 7 strikeouts.

The Padres threatened to score in the 7th inning when Alonso singled, Amarista walked and then Bud Black went to Justin Upton to pinch hit but he was unsuccessful striking out after a lengthy battle with Scott Oberg. Lyles pitched 6.2 innings allowing 1 run and striking out 4.

In the 8th inning, a two-out double by Cory Spangenberg’s 2-out double brought Matt Kemp to the plate looking to tie or take the lead. Kemp worked the count before eventually popping out to the shortstop.

Alonso would reach base again in the 9th via a walk but back-to-back strikeouts by Will Venable and Alexi Amarista would end the game as the Rockies won in a low-scoring affair 2-1. Jordan Lyles got the win to improve to 2-1 on the season and Tyson Ross fell to 1-1.

Spangenberg went 2-4 on the day, but Yonder Alonso was the offensive star for the Padres going 3-3 with a walk and pushing his average up to .400.

Corey Dickerson, Nolan Arenado and former Padre Nick Hundley each contributed 2 hits for the Rockies offense.

The Padres are now 10-7, and the Rockies having righted the ship a bit and are now 9-7.

Next up for the Padres is a 9-game home-stand that begins with the Los Angeles Dodgers coming to town tomorrow at 7:10. The pitching match-up will be Zack Greinke versus Andrew Cashner.
