Kris Bryant Makes Debut Spoiled By Padres 5-4

The San Diego Padres spoiled the highly anticipated Kris Bryant debut as they beat the Chicago Cubs 5-4. There was much speculation that that Bryant is the savior of the Cubs after having such a storied minor league career. The celebration of the prodigy will have to wait.
James Shields got the start for the Padres this afternoon. He pitched 6 innings allowing 5 hits and 3 runs while striking out 9. He was rewarded with his second win of the season.
On the other side it was Jason Hammel who started on the mound. He pitched 6.1 innings allowing 7 hits and 4 runs while striking out 5. He was credited with the no decision.
It was the Cubs who got on the board first when Jonathan Herrera reached base off of a Shields throwing error. The error led to Hammel crossing the plate for the 1-0 lead. Herrera eventually scored in the inning off a pass ball.
In the fourth Will Middlebrooks put the Padres on the board. He hit a 2-run shot to right that brought home Yonder Alonso.
The Cubs were back at it in the 5th inning. Jorge Soler hit a single that scored Herrera. Anthony Rizzo hit a double to right that brought in Dexter Fowler and Cubs held a 4-2 advantage.
With the Padres down 4-2, Wil Myers hit a 3-run shot to center that scored Jedd Gyorko and Alexi Amarista to give the Padres a 5-4 lead. His home run was off Brian Schlitter who was credited with the loss.
Kris Bryant was 0-4 in his major league debut.
Craig Kimbrel came on in the 9th inning and shut the club down for the Frias. The Padres will play game two of the series tomorrow afternoon.
