Rumor: Kevin Love Mulls Over Move To Lakers

Kevin Love’s wish came true this summer, when was traded to the Cleveland Cavaliers to form yet another “Big 3.”  The Cavs are struggling so far this season but it’s still early. Kevin Love is playing with more talent on his team than he ever did in Minnesota so all is right with the world, right?

Maybe, Maybe not. Kevin Love has the option to opt out of contract this summer and test free agency waters. It’s unlikely, but Sam Smith of Bulls.com provides a hypothetical situation:

“It’s not going to get as much discussion during the season, but one of the biggest issues for the Cavs is that both LeBron James and Kevin Love own opt outs after this season. LeBron James basically cannot afford to go anywhere after his return to Cleveland. But watch out for Love. Indications are he will seriously consider the opt out and has his eyes on a return to Los Angeles, where he attended college and where the Lakers long have had him on their free agent wish list …”

Now, is it likely that Kevin Love leave the championship contending Cavs for the Lakers? No. But I think it is important to think about the possibility. Love is no Dwight Howard in terms of his off-the-court attention demanded, but aren’t they in similar situations? Howard leaves Orlando to play with the stars in LA to ultimately leave and go to Houston. Could Love leave Minnesota to play with the stars in Cleveland to return home to LA?

No, I don’t have a crystal ball to tell you what Love will do but I do wonder how he feels after a year of playing with LeBron and Kyrie. Maybe he won’t like it and will want to go back to be the featured player. If that ends up being the case, what better place to do this than Los Angeles? The Lakers will have the cap space necessary to sign Love if he indeed decides he wants to make the change. Only time will tell on what the UCLA product will want to do.

For the Lakers, they will refocus their efforts to their next opponent the Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers beat the Charlotte Hornets in their game last night to earn their first win of the season. Click here to read the recap.
