Opening Day in Chavez Ravine was highlighted by the debut of lead-off man Jimmy Rollins. Rollins in his first game as a Dodger will be remembered for his go-ahead three run home run to solidify the first win of the season.

Interestingly enough it did not take much time for one team to score. Clayton Kershaw (6.0 IP, 9 K’s, 3 ER, 4.50 ERA) in his first start of the season faced newly acquired pitcher James Shields (6.0 IP, 8 K’s, 2 ER, 3.00 ERA) in a back and forth match full of intrigue. The new addition for San Diego in the off-season center-fielder Wil Myers was responsible for the first run of the game as he was hit by a pitch.

Myers would then go on to steal second base as former Dodger Matt Kemp took advantage of the scoring opportunity. Kemp brought in the games first run with an RBI single top of the first inning. The offense for the Los Angeles Dodgers started in the bottom of the fourth inning. Adrian Gonzalez scored the first run of the season with a blast to right field as this tied the game at 1-1.

The scoring would continue as Howie Kendrick in his Dodger debut hit a triple to deep center field. Carl Crawford was responsible for the go-ahead run as his double to right field gave the Dodgers a 2-1 lead. The San Diego Padres did respond fast as Matt Kemp hit a two-run RBI double giving the lead back at 3-2. Kemp went (2-4, 3 RBI) in his return to Los Angeles that’s not to bad against the reigning Cy-Young winner.

James Shields and Clayton Kerhsaw were relieved by the top of the seventh inning. Relief pitcher Yimi Garcia (1.0 IP, 2 K’s) and Nick Vincent (0.2 IP, ER, K) were now on the mound. Adrian Gonzalez hit a double to right field for a much-needed base hit. Howie Kendrick came up big as he hit the game tying RBI double to right center field to bring in Gonzalez for a 3-3 tie.

In the bottom of the eighth, Joel Peralta (W, 1-0) relieved Yimi Garcia while Shawn Kelley (L, 0-1, 1.1 IP, 2 ER) came in for Nick Vincent. Once Joc Pederson was awarded his first major league walk, Andre Ethier made one great run to first base to beat the throw to first. This ultimately set up a duel between Jimmy Rollins as he worked a 3-2 count until he hit the go-ahead three-run home run to right field for a 6-3 Dodger win. Tomorrow at 7:10 PM, Tyson Ross (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will face Zack Greinke (0-0, 0.00 ERA)
