In the Padres final tune-up before Opening Day, they took on the defending Mexican League Champion Diablos Rojos de Mexico.
The Diablos Rojos are the most storied franchise winning 16 Mexican League titles in their history. Mexico City is managed by former Major League catcher Miguel Ojeda. The Diablos Rojos some former major and minor league players, most notably Ruben Rivera.
Ian Kennedy got the start for the Padres tossing three hit-less innings and striking out three. Kennedy is scheduled to start the home opener Thursday against the San Francisco Giants.
For the Padres, Wil Myers went 2-4 with a run. Myers also had a spectacular diving catch in the right-center field gap, doubling off a Mexico City runner.
Matt Kemp and Justin Upton each contributed 2 RBI in their first game in the home dugout at Petco Park. Yonder Alonso also went 2-3 with 2 runs to help supply the San Diego offense that did their damage in the 3rd, 4th and 5th innings.
Ramon Urias and Emmanuel Avila supplied the two hits for Mexico City.
The Padres would go on to win 8-0.
