Matt Kemp had a good day, going 2-for-4 with the triple, an RBI, and a run scored, and Justin Upton was 2-for-3 with two runs, two RBIs, and the home run in the third inning, as good relief pitching and timely hitting pushed the San Diego Padres to victory over the Seattle Mariners in Cactus League action Tuesday afternoon.

The Mariners grabbed an early lead when a Seth Smith single scored Austin Jackson in the top of the first inning off Padres starter Andrew Cashner.

San Diego would string together three runs in the bottom of the second to take go up 3-1, though. Clint Barmes singled with the bases loaded to bring home Will Middlebrooks and Justin Upton, and Barmes and Wil Nieves each moved up a base on the play on an error by Mariners left fielder Dustin Ackley. Then Cashner helped his own cause with an RBI groundout that scored Wil Nieves.

Seattle clawed back for another run in the third inning and Smith was involved again, this time homering to right center field off Cashner.

In the bottom half of the inning, though, the Padres answered again with three more runs to go up 6-2. Matt Kemp tripled and scored Jedd Gyorko. Upton immediately followed with a two-run home run, his third of the spring, to left center field.

In the top of the fourth, the Mariners got another run off Cashner, when Jackson singled home Ackley to tighten the score to 6-3.

Cashner was finished after four innings, allowing three runs on six hits, including a homerun, and two walks. He struck out four on 82 pitches.

After the fourth, relievers for both clubs entered the game and the scoring pace dropped off, with each team recording several innings of blanks to preserve the score at 6-3.

Chris Rearick, Alex Torres, and Joaquin Benoit all recorded scoreless innings for the Padres in relief.

The Mariners rallied closer in the eighth inning off Padres reliever Scott Elbert, when Endy Chavez doubled to right field and brought home Willie Bloomquist. That made the game 6-4, but Elbert held the Mariners in check the rest of the inning and they would get no closer until the ninth.

In the ninth, Shawn Kelley dispatched of the Mariners in short order, preserving the victory.

The Padres improved to 11-10 in Cactus League play, and will next play the Dodgers in Glendale tomorrow afternoon at 1:05 pm PT.
