RECAP: Angels 11, Rockies 0

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim exploded offensively and were dominant on the mound, beating the Colorado Rockies 11-0 on Tuesday afternoon. Mike Trout hit two home runs and had 6 RBIs as the Angels dominated the Rockies in every facet of the game in Cactus League action at Salt River Fields and Talking Stick in Scottsdale.
Both clubs started the game with what could very well be their Opening Day lineups, but neither team had much luck early on this St. Patrick’s Day against Drew Rucinski, starting for the Angels in place of C.J. Wilson, and Chad Bettis, starting for the Rockies.
The Angels pushed across the first run of the game in the top of the third off reliever David Hale, when Trout drove in Collin Cowgill on a ground out.
The Angels extended their lead as the bats finally broke out in the top of the fifth off Hale. The rally started with a Cowgill double to lead off the inning. Cowgill scored when Kole Calhoun singled, and Calhoun scored on a two-run Trout home run to left center field. Hale settled down after the barrage, but the Angels left the inning with a 4-0 lead.
Rucinski didn’t allow a base runner until the bottom of the fifth, when Carlos Gonzalez led off the inning with a walk. That was the last batter Rucinski faced, as he worked four-plus innings allowing no hits while striking out five, before giving way to Cam Bedrosian.
The Angels put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth, and Calhoun and Trout were in the middle of it once again. Calhoun singled up the middle off Rockies reliever Brett Marshall with the bases loaded, scoring Marc Krauss and Johnny Giavotella to extend the lead to 6-0. Trout, the very next hitter, slugged a three-run home run to left center to extend the lead even further to 9-0, after which Marshall was replaced by Rockies reliever Tommy Kahnle.
For good measure, Krauss, up for his second at-bat in the sixth inning after the Angels batted around, singled off Kahnle to score Kyle Kubitza and push the Halos to a 10-0 cushion.
Rucinski and Bedrosian held the Rockies hitless until the sixth inning when an Audry Perez single broke up the no-hitter and gave the Rockies only their second base runner of the game to that point.
The Angels pushed across one more in the top of the seventh when Josh Rutledge scored on a Daniel Robertson single off Rockies reliever Ken Robertson.
In addition to Rucinski’s masterful work, Bedrosian logged two scoreless innings, and Adam Wilk, Ryan Mattheus, and Frank Herrmann each contributed a scoreless frame for the Angels, holding the Rockies to just two hits and two walks across the entire afternoon.
In addition to Trout, Calhoun went 3-for-4 with 2 runs and 3 RBIs, Krauss was 2-for-2 with a run and an RBI, and Rutledge walked in his two at-bats and scored both times.
Wilson missed his second consecutive opportunity to start after being held out of today’s game with an illness. Last week, Wilson tweaked his knee during fielding drills and was held out of a scheduled start against the Chicago Cubs. It remains unclear how soon he can get back on the mound for the Angels. He hasn’t started since a March 7 tilt against the Oakland Athletics.
The Angels are off tomorrow, and return to action against the Dodgers in Glendale on Thursday at 1:05 pm Pacific Time.
