Hanley Ramirez Offered $15.3-million Qualifying Offer

Hanley Ramirez, one of the biggest talks regarding the Dodgers offseason was offered a 15.3 million-dollar qualifying offer. Hanley has seven days to decide whether to accept or decline this offer. He would indeed be taking a cut to his pay, as he was paid $16 million for the 2014 season.

If Hanley chooses to accept the offer, he will continue to be a Los Angeles Dodger for another season. If he declines, which is most likely, he will enter free agency and get the more money he wants from another team. Over the last two seasons, there have been 22 qualifying offers made to players, which were all declined. That gives you an idea of how rare it is for players to exercise their qualifying offers.

Why wouldn’t the Dodgers offer the three-time all-star a higher/longer contract?

Well, the Dodgers already have ten players with contracts that go into 2017. While the Dodgers may still be able to afford to keep Ramirez, his age and health definitely stand as barriers to a long-term contract as he’s missed 110 games in the last two seasons.

The Dodgers would definitely benefit from Ramirez’s talent and contribution for another season, in fact for more seasons to come, but his inability to stay healthy just wouldn’t make sense for the Dodgers to sign him to a long-term deal.

If Hanley were to leave, the Dodgers would have Miguel Rojas and Erisbel Arruebarrena as leading candidates to replace him. To make things even more interesting  they have one of the top prospects, infielder Corey Seager, his young age of 20 draws issues as well.
