RECAP: White Sox 6, Dodgers 4

With runners on the corners and one out, Logan Kensing struck out Enrique Hernandez and induced a Scott Schebler ground ball to preserve a 6-4 victory for the Chicago White Sox, spoiling the Los Angeles Dodgers’ Cactus League opener this afternoon in Glendale, Arizona.

Consecutive ninth-inning singles by Darnell Sweeney, Alex Guerrero, and Corey Seager rallied the Dodgers and cut the Sox lead to two runs, but that was as close as Los Angeles would get in the ninth as Kensing snuffed out the rally to slam the door on a potential comeback. The Dodgers are now 0-1 this spring.

Veteran left-hander and non-roster invitee Erik Bedard started for the Dodgers, hoping to make enough of an impression to earn a spot this year. After a clean first, he gave up a double to Avisail Garcia in the second, and a single from Alexei Ramirez gave the White Sox a 1-0 lead. Bedard left after two innings, allowing just those two hits and one run.

After Bedard’s exit, Juan Nicasio, appearing in a Dodger uniform for the first time since being acquired in November, allowed four hits and three runs in the third to give the White Sox a 4-0 cushion.

The Dodgers plated one in the bottom of the third off Sox reliever Brad Penny, when three consecutive singles by Joc Pederson, Jimmy Rollins and Carl Crawford cut the deficit to three.

The White Sox notched two more in the fifth off reliever Carlos Frias on a Ramirez double. Ramirez, who was then lifted for a pinch runner, had a strong spring debut, going 2-for-3 with 3 RBIs. Garcia (2-for-2 and a walk, an RBI, and a run) and Adam LaRoche (1-for-2 with 2 RBIs and a run) also did damage for the South Siders.

The Dodgers got one back in the sixth when minor leaguer O’Koyea Dickson homered to left field off Sox reliever Eric Surkamp to make it 6-2.

In the seventh, the Dodgers had a rally brewing with the bases loaded and no outs after two walks and a Seager single, but Kyle Jensen hit into a double play. It scored Andre Ethier from third to cut the lead to 6-4, but also snuffed the rally and White Sox hurler Tyler Danish escaped the jam only allowing that run.

Despite allowing a pair of runs, Frias struck out five in his two innings of work. After him, Sergio Santos, Adam Liberatore, Josh Ravin and Blake Smith worked clean sixth, seventh, eighth, and ninth innings, respectively, combining on three strikeouts while only allowing a walk.

Guerrero and Pederson each went 2-for-2 on the afternoon, Sweeney singled, walked, and scored twice, and Seager singled and walked in two plate appearances as well. But, before the three-hit near-rally in the ninth, White Sox pitchers held the Dodgers to just seven hits and a walk. Dodgers’ everyday players did little by way of offense against Sox pitchers Jose Quintana and Penny.

The two clubs observed a moment of silence before the game for former Sox legend Minnie Minoso, who recently passed away. Both teams will meet again in Glendale tomorrow, before the Dodgers have a split squad day against the Mariners (in Glendale) and Brewers (in Maryvale) on Friday.
