According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com the Los Angeles Angels have agreed to a one-year deal with Matt Joyce.

With Josh Hamilton out due to shoulder surgery Matt Joyce and Collin Cowgill will be splitting in left field. Joyce who had spent the last six years in Tampa was brought over in a December trade. Last year he hit .254 with nine home runs and 52 RBI’s.

The Los Angeles Times reports the following:

“Joyce, 30, who was acquired from Tampa Bay for reliever Kevin Jepsen in December, had asked for $5.2 million, and the Angels offered $4.2 million. Joyce made $3.7 million in 2014, when he hit .254 with a .349 on-base percentage, nine home runs and 52 runs batted in for the Rays.

Joyce, who bats left-handed, was expected to be the team’s primary designated hitter this season, but with Josh Hamilton probably opening on the disabled listwhile he recovers from right-shoulder surgery, Joyce is expected to see some more time in left field.”

It will be interesting to see how Matt Joyce fits in with this Angels club. When Hamilton returns either Joyce will be DH and Hamilton will play the field or vice versa.
