Jonathan Quick Breaks LA Kings Shutout Record

The goalie known for evading the spotlight, Jonathan Quick, had no choice but to embrace the love last night as he broke the LA Kings 36-year-old record for shutouts.
Jonathan Quick made 29 saves to set the club record with his 33rd career shutout and to add to the celebration, the LA Kings beat the Sabres 2-0 last night to make it their fifth consecutive win.
Quick was hardly tested in the race for most shutouts. He pulled ahead of Rogie Vachon with his second in three games. The Kings are the NHL’s best defensive team last season, and they have only allowed three goals on their way to winning the first five games of its six-game homestand.
“A shutout, it takes 20 men to do that, to shut a team out for 60 minutes, so I’m very grateful to my teammates over the years,” Quick said. “It’s over now. We’ll keep playing. … It’s more about what as a team we’re able to do, but I know what Rogie achieved and what he meant to this team and this city.”
Although the spotlight was on a positive achievement for Jonathan Quick, the missing Slava Voyanov could not be ignored. Jeff Carter and Anze Kopitar took over for the team and scored power-play goals for the defending champions in their first game since the Kings defenseman Slava Voynov was suspended indefinitely by the NHL
Voynov, a two-time Stanley Cup winner and a key contributor to the Kings, still hasn’t been charged. The Kings filled his position by replacing him with Jake Muzzin, who returned from injury for his first game of the season.
It looks like it was a blessing in disguise, with the loss of Voyanov shaking the team, the Kings ramped up their defense and made it impossible for the Sabres to get an edge over them.
“We’ve had to do it in different ways, different start times and different things going on,” Kings coach Darryl Sutter said. “We’ve had a lot to deal with, and we handled it well tonight.”
Ted Nolan, the Kings forward, played against his Dad’s team for the first time in the NHL last night, but the Kings came out on top. He had this to say about their win.
“Our last couple of games, our effort has been a lot better,” Ted Nolan said. “Everything starts with work. The first five or six games, the effort wasn’t there. And now the last couple of games, the effort is there.”
