San Diego Padres Trade Deadline Recap
- Updated: August 3, 2019
The San Diego Padres took part in a monumental trade on Tuesday night. The Padres would unload a huge package to acquire the Reds number one overall prospect. In the blockbuster three-team trade, San Diego sent OF Franmil Reyes, RHP Logan Allen, and INF Victor Nova to Cleveland. Nova and Allen are both young prospects with potential, while Reyes is the big acquisition. Reyes has the capability to hit over forty home runs this season. With the AL having a DH, Reyes no longer has to play the field so his poor defense will not hurt the Indians. As for the Padres, they now have the center fielder of the future in Taylor Trammell. Trammel is a speedy lefty hitter with power who can play good defense. The only knock on Trammell is his arm strength. Trammell will report to AA for San Diego.
The next day, just minutes before the Trade Deadline ended, the Padres would go on to upgrade their bullpen. San Diego acquired RHP Carl Edwards Jr. from the Cubs for LHP Brad Wieck. This move comes as a surprise due to Chicago giving up Edwards Jr. so easily. As of this moment, Wieck has an ERA over six. While Edwards Jr. is struggling with an ERA over five, he has been a solid reliever for the Cubs prior to this year. Overall, the Padres did well for themselves at this year’s Trade Deadline.
After their off day on Wednesday, the San Diego will begin a six-game road trip starting on Thursday. San Diego will start their road trip with a four-game series against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. The Padres have to play better going forward before their wild card dreams fade away from them.
