Padres First Half Review

At 45-45, the San Diego Padres have experienced everything a team could possibly go through. The highest of highs, and the lowest of lows. In March and April, San Diego finished with a 16-13 record. After a good start to the season, the Padres would go on to finish May with a 13-14 record. Following a losing month, the Padres would conclude the month of June with a 12-14 record. The bad news of sitting at 45-45 is they are fourteen games back of the Los Angeles Dodgers. The good news of sitting at 45-45 is they are two games back of the Philadelphia Phillies for the second wild-card spot.

San Diego is coming off a series where the won three of four against the Dodgers, in Los Angeles. This is a major accomplishment due to the fact the Dodgers only had nine regulars season losses coming into this series. An interesting stat to note about the 2019 Padres is how they play against bad teams. So far this year, when the Padres a team under .500, they have a losing record. If the Padres can beat the teams they are supposed to beat in the second half, they will make the playoffs.

As for team performance, the offense has been wonderful to watch. Manny Machado and Fernando Tatis Jr. are one of the most exciting duos on the left side of the infield this year. Hunter Renfroe and Franmil Reyes are bashing home runs from the corner outfield spots. Every player listed above had serious cases to be an All Star this year, but unfortunately, all of them were snubbed. As for the pitching, the rookies have held their own. Chris Paddack has and an ERA under three, and Logan Allen has two wins in his first three starts. The bullpen is not a typical Padres bullpen this year. However, closer Kirby Yates has converted 30 out of 31 saves this year. The All-Star break will serve as a nice rest for Yates and the rest of the Padres bullpen.

Currently, San Diego is in third place in the National League West. The next few weeks will determine if they will buy or sell at the trade deadline. If the Padres make a move going forward, it will be for a starting pitcher to lead all the young starters they currently have.
