Padres Finish Homestand 3-3
- Updated: May 10, 2019
On Wednesday afternoon, the San Diego Padres concluded their six-game homestand with the New York Mets. After some tough loss on Tuesday night, the Padres bounced back and beat the Mets 3-2. Not only did they win the game, but they also won the series. As a result of winning the series, the Padres secured a .500 homestand. These series win against the Mets should provide a boost for the team going forward on their next road trip. Closer Kirby Yates tallied another save as he continues his dominance.
One of the major stars this series was Hunter Renfroe, who homered in multiple at-bats. One of those home runs, was a grand slam off of Kenley Jansen, thus walking off the Los Angeles Dodgers. Renfroe would go on to homer twice against the Mets. Renfroe, as well as the rest of the Padres offense, is starting to heat up. Another key hitter is off to a good start in May is Eric Hosmer. Hosmer is currently sitting at a seven-game hitting streak as he will look to extend that streak on the road.
As for the rotation, rookie starting pitcher Chris Paddack threw seven and two-thirds without allowing a run. He has now gone seven consecutive starts for the Padres while allowing four or fewer hits or less in each of those outings. While the 2019 Major League Baseball season is still young, Paddack is making a case for National League Rookie of the Year. If he can continue to pitch at this pace, he should be considered for the National League Cy Young award.
Up next for the Padres, they will have an off day on Thursday followed by a three-game series with the Colorado Rockies. After a weekend in Denver, the Padres will travel to Los Angeles for a series against the Dodgers.
