According to Alden Gonzalez of MLB.com Los Angeles Angels pitcher as gained 25 pounds this offseason in prepartion for the year.

Weaver has been the anchor to the Angels staff for years now and is taking this offseason serious in order to take his game to the next level. With an Angels staff that will be without Garrett Richards at the start of the year it will be important the Weaver eats up innings.

Richards was excellent for the Angels last year as he went 13-4 with a 2.61 ERA before going down with an injury. Weaver had an awesome year as well as he went 18-9 with a 3.59 ERA.

Weaver’s averaged 6.1 innings per start and he told Gonzalez he’d like to go deeper into games.

“Numbers-wise it was all right,” Weaver said of 2014, “but from a personal standpoint, me being me and ultra competitive, I want to get deeper in games. The bullpen helped me a lot last year. I just want to gain some strength. I went to different lifting last year. It’s been paying off. I’m going to stick with it.”

It will be interesting to see how the increase in weight will help Weaver this season. The countdown until pitchers and catchers report for spring training is approaching fast and Weaver will be sure to surprise some of his teamates with the increase in size.
