- Updated: September 24, 2018
In the first-ever meeting between the cross-town rivals, the Los Angeles Rams outlasted the Los Angeles Chargers, 35-23. The Rams can now call themselves “Kings Of Los Angeles” after the win.
The Rams (3-0) remained perfect after the third week of the NFL season with their high-powered offense. The game was like a track meet at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum today. For the stadium has hosted two Olympics games, and the home of the USC Trojans football this game definitely was held in the right place.
Jared Goff passed for 354 yards and three touchdown passes to Robert Woods, Cooper Kupp, and Brandon Cooks, while Todd Gurley gained 105 yards on the ground to lead the Rams attack. The Rams special teams play looked impressive, scoring on a blocked punt that was recovered by Blake Countess for another score.
The Chargers (1-2) offense was able to score on the Rams defense as Philip Rivers was able to connect on two touchdown passes to Mike Williams from 42 and 20 yards. Williams played the best game of his sophomore season, with 4 catches for 81 yards. Melvin Gordon gained 80 yards on the ground on 15 carries.
RAM NOTES:
The team’s secondary lost two-key players to injury in the win. Marcus Peters suffered a calf injury in the second quarter and did not return to the game. Aqib Talib injured his ankle in the second half of the game and was on crutches. The Rams offense scored 30-points for the 12th time in the past two seasons.
BOLT NOTES:
The Chargers was without the services of wide receiver Travis Benjamin and Joey Bosa. Both players remained sidelined with injuries. Benjamin missed his second straight game with an injured right foot. Bosa hasn’t played so far this season.
NEXT UP FOR THE CHARGERS AND RAMS:
The Chargers will be back in Carson to face off against the San Francisco 49ers. The Niners season took a turn for the worse on Sunday as their starting Quarterback Jimmy Garopplo suffered a season-ending ACL tear. Now the team will turn to C.J.Bethard to command the Niners offense.
The Rams will have a short week as they will prepare for a Thursday Night matchup against the Minnesota Vikings. The Vikings suffered their first loss of the season, as they were stunned by the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo 27-6.
