Padres Fall to Angels 6-3
- Updated: August 15, 2018
On Monday night, the Padres played a hard fought extra inning game. The Padres would end up losing in the tenth inning. Starting pitcher Clayton Richard pitched a gem, as he went eight innings, and only giving up one run. As a result of the long start, the bullpen only threw two innings. Kirby Yates also pitched a scoreless inning in relief. The damage, however, would come in the tenth as the Padres would allow four runs to score. The key play of the inning came from a flyball hit to center field. After a miscommunication in the outfield, the ball dropped and bounced over the fence. As a result, the go-ahead run would come around to score. The inning would escalate as three more runs would score, thus reliever Craig Stammen would take the loss.
Offensively for San Diego could have been better. Shortstop Freddy Galvis hit a solo home run in the third inning. First baseman Eric Hosmer drove in a pair of runs with a sacrifice fly in the eighth, and a solo home run in the tenth. The Padres would leave runners in scoring position in the eighth an ninth innings, ultimately sending the game to extras.
Up next for San Diego they will play the second game of the series Tuesday night. The Padres will send to the mound Brett Kennedy who is 0-1 with a 13.50 earned run average.
