Padres Offense Tops Cubs 10-6

On Sunday afternoon, a slugfest took place at Wrigley Field. The Padres scored ten runs on fifteen hits, as they beat the Cubs 10-6. San Diego hit three home runs in the ballgame. Each of the Padres first four hitters had two hits or more against Chicago pitchers. As a result, San Diego tallied seven extra-base hits. First baseman Eric Hosmer drove in two and collected three hits. Hunter Renfroe also had a big game, as he drove in three runs. The Padres had an encouraging day as they did some of their best work against ace pitcher John Lester. Due to Lester leaving the game early, San Diego was able to get to the Cubs bullpen. The Padres were able to score four runs late in the game to distance themselves from the Cubs.

As for the pitching, the San Diego pitchers were able to get the important outs in critical situations. San Diego’s starting pitcher Joey Lucchesi held Chicago’s offense to just two earned runs over five and two-thirds innings. The Padres had defensive miscues in the fifth, which led to an unearned run. After Lucchesi, reliever Jose Castillo entered the game. Castillo threw two-thirds of an inning while giving up a run. Following Castillo, was set up man Craig Stammen. Stammen pitched an inning and two thirds. Finally, after Stammen, Closer Kirby Yates locked down the game, as the Padres split the four-game series with the Cubs. Hopefully, the Padres can build off of the win as their schedule for the remainder of the season is quite strong.

Prior to the game, San Diego made some roster moves. The Padres announced their most reliable starting pitcher Tyson Ross, had been claimed off waivers by the Cardinals. San Diego also announced pitcher Jordan Lyles had been sent to the Brewers via a waiver deal. The reasoning behind the deals is so the Padres can get a look at some of their younger pitchers from their minor league affiliates. San Diego may continue looking into more waiver deals this month. The Padres still have quite a few top prospects knocking at the door, waiting for a call-up.

Up next for San Diego, they will enjoy an off day on Monday. After the off day, San Diego will play a three-game series against the Milwaukee Brewers starting on Tuesday. San Diego will send to the mound left-hander Clayton Richard. So far this season, Richard is 7-10, with a 4.99 earned run average. San Diego is still seeking their first series win since June 11-13th.
