Reign Weekly Wrap-up: Three Games Left Before the Playoffs
- Updated: April 12, 2018
The Ontario Reign is officially in the Calder Cup playoffs. The team – which next plays the Stockton Heat at 7 p.m., Wednesday, April 11 in Stockton – presently sit at second place in the Pacific Division, .038 percentage points behind the Tucson Roadrunners, and can clinch the second spot (and home ice) by winning tonight and seeing both the San Diego Gulls and Texas Stars lose.
The closer we get to the playoffs, the more crunch time it gets. Three games to go for each team in the Pacific.
But the Reign is in, with help from a week gaining three points.
In the April 4 match against the Bakersfield Condors, the teams played to a 2-2 after regulation and overtime. Michael Mersch tallied two assists in the game, but none of the shooters in the shootout could find the back of the net, and the Condors took it 3-2. Goalie Cal Petersen stopped 18 of 20 shots throughout the game, but let one in during the shootout, which was enough for the loss.
In the April 6 game against rival San Diego Gulls, goals from Brett Sutter, Jonny Brodzinski and Matt Luff were the difference in a 3-2 win. Petersen stopped two shots again, but this time that was enough for the win, stopping 23 of 25 shots.
In the April 7 rematch with the Gulls, the score was the same 3-2 but favoring the opposing team. Scott Wedgewood faced 47 shots, stopping 44 of them.
Now it’s onto the last three games of the season before the big dance begins.
