Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Skating Towards the Playoffs

Darn, the Reign have fallen below its arch-rivals San Diego Gulls, presently trailing by a whopping .003 percentage points. By splitting the two games last week, the Reign team stands in third place in the Pacific Division at 33-21-4-2 and 72 points. Hopefully, it will be able to make up that huge ground in the next couple weeks, including the next match-up against the Bakersfield Condors at 7 p.m., Friday, March 30 at the Citizens Business Bank Arena.

In the March 23 game, the lowly Condors scored three third period goals to outdistance the Reign, 4-1. Ontario led the game for over half the game on a Jonny Brodzinski goal from Michael Mersch and Oscar Fantenberg. Goalie Cal Petersen made 36 saves on 39 shots in the loss, only his second regulation loss in the last 15 starts.

In the March 24 game, the Reign destroyed the even lowlier San Jose Barracuda 7-3, with big help from Philippe Maillet, who notched four assists and one goal, his 17th. Six other Reign players scored in the lopsided affair, a bounce-back victory for Petersen who made 33 saves on 36 shots.

It appears you can give up three goals and it’s OK … if the team in front of you scores seven.

What a difference a day makes.

We shall see what more of a difference this team can make coming down to the wire in a tightly fought Pacific Division.
