Weekly Reign Wrap-up: Tight Pacific Standings

Standings are a funny thing to review in the realm of the AHL. I mean take for example the Pacific Division. There is a numbered list of first through eighth. Since it’s all listed in the order of percentage rate, you have some strange listings there. The Tucson Roadrunners are in first place with 67 points but a .620 rate. Texas Stars are in fourth place with 73 points but a .589 rate. The fifth-place Ontario Reign has the same amount of points – 64 – as the second place San Diego Gulls. I guess once the number of games are equal by the end of the season, it will all become clear.

For now, the Reign next plays the Cleveland Monsters at 7 p.m., Wednesday, March 14 at the Citizens Bank Arena.

The team played three games last week going 2-1-0-0.

In last Wednesday’s 3-1 victory over the Stockton Heat, goals came from Philippe Maillet (14) Alex Lintuniemi and Sam Herr. Goalie Cal Petersen saved 30 of 31 shots in the win.

In Friday’s match, Petersen saved all 25 shots in a 3-0 shutout over the San Diego Gulls. Three first period goals from Andrew Crescenzi (12), Austin Wagner and T.J. Hensick (8) made the difference.

In Saturday play, the Reign did an about-face and got shutout itself 4-0, watching on as Samuel Blais scored a hat trick for the other guys.

Keep watching those standings, the teams are all bunched up now. But that won’t last forever.
