The deal is said to have a team option for the third season and to be around $10 million a year.
Lately, Williams has been on the trade block and was considered one of the team’s more valuable pieces with the trade deadline approaching. The sixth man of the year front-runner is averaging career highs in points (23.3) and assists (5.3) per game. With the signing of Williams, the guard will not be able to be traded until 6 months after the contract is signed due to NBA rules.
Despite being one of the league’s best bench scorers Williams has bounced around the league quite a bit since 2011 having played for 6 different teams in that span, including two separate stints with the Lakers.
The Clippers must feel the signing of Williams will steady the team offensively with his consistent scoring and play-making ability. With the Clippers doing what seems to be a bit of retooling mid-season and players like DeAndre Jordan and Avery Bradley still on the block this signing should at least help the team have a bit of stability for the remainder of the season.
