Injuries Stifle Clippers In 109-91 Loss To Spurs
- Updated: December 18, 2017
Sometimes in the NBA it’s easy to tell who’s going to win a game before the opening tip.
With injuries to Blake Griffin, Patrick Beverly, Lou Williams, Wes Johnson and Danilo Gallinari the Clippers were comin in a bit shorthanded. Taking on a Spurs team that just had their star forward Kawhi Leonard return from an injury of his own.
Leonard didn’t make much of an impact in this one with just 7 points in only 16 minutes but it didn’t seem to slow down his team. San Antonio went an impressive 49% from the field while five Spurs scored in double-digits. Their shooting from the field is what gave them the lead but their shooting from the free throw line is what allowed them to grow it. The Spurs shot a fantastic 80% from the charity stripe compared to the Clippers 50%.
Though little went the Clippers way, there were some things the feisty bunch did well. Los Angeles competed. After trailing by as many as 15 the Clippers were able to trim the Spurs lead down to just 2 in the third quarter before the Spurs finally started to pull away. With two two-way players in the starting lineup and little depth due to injuries, this competitiveness is a pleasure to watch for fans hoping to just see this Clippers team fight.

Once stat that followed the Clippers hustle was their ability to swipe the ball all night long. The Spurs turned the ball over 17 times on the night and the Clippers forced many of those, ending the contest with 13 steals. Sam Dekker led the team in the category with 3.
The team’s leading scorers on the night were DeAndre Jordan and Jamil Wilson who each finished with just 13 points, but for Jordan, it came with yet another double-double as the big man added 14 rebounds as well.
Jordan was the team’s best player on the night, but when your leading scorer knocks in just 13 points it’s going to be difficult to win most nights in the NBA and Monday was no exception. San Antonio was able to pull away in the fourth quarter and win this one 109-91.
This ends the Clippers four game road trip that saw them go 1-3. The team will return home for a winnable matchup against their Pacific division foe the Phoenix Suns.
